How To Use Modes in Home Assistant Automations

Back in version .115 Home Assistant added some mode options for automations, and gave us more control over the flow. And if you are like me you may not have paid much attention to them at first.

These new modes add the ability to define how an automation handles getting triggered or more specifically trigger spammed spammed. Like when some is pacing in front of a motion sensor that sends out audible notifications anytime it senses motion.

Prior to these modes, if an automation triggered again while it was running you had no control over what happened. I think in some cases the automation just stopped without completing. Now you have 4 options.

  • Single
  • Queued
  • Restart
  • Parallel

These new modes really do add some much needed control to how automations flow in Home Assistant, and have the potential to reduce to complexity required in some situations.

I recently made a short movie that walks through what these new modes do, why you might want to use them, and even provide some examples of how I am using them. It’s free to watch, so check it out over on YouTube:
